Frequently Asked Questions
How much will a website cost?
All websites I produce are bespoke designed and individual to your business needs. So at the beginning of the process I'll discuss with you what those needs are. Plus how best to make the website work to fit those needs. After the initial discussions I will be able to provide you with a detailed quote and work plan.
Guideline Costs:-
Marketing Websites (static) ‐ Typically in the region of £300 ‐ £800
Marketing Websites (CMS) ‐ Typically in the region of £600 ‐ £2000
New Website Design Visuals ‐ Typically in the region of £250 ‐ £800
How long will it take?
Project timescales will vary depending on the type of website required. It's size and features, plus the time it takes to provide content, information and feedback.
As a rough guide our projects can take:
Marketing Websites (static) ‐ Typically around 4 ‐ 6 weeks
Marketing Websites ‐ Typically around 4 ‐ 8 weeks
Design Visuals ‐ Typically around 1 ‐ 4 weeks
What are your payment terms?
My usual payment terms are as follows
Marketing Websites ‐ Payments will be split into three key stages. 40% upfront, then 30% when design is agreed and final 30% when your website is ready to go live.
Design Visuals ‐ Payments split into two key stages with 50% upfront. The remaining 50% payable before the completed visuals are submitted
For larger or ongoing long term projects a payment plan can be arranged. Typically in line with the completion of key stages throughout the project.
What is a Static Marketing website?
Static websites are ideal for those who need a website. But won't be needing to update the content very often so don't require a cms.
How soon can we get started?
Once we are in agreement with the quote/work plan and the initial payment has been received. I will schedule in the work. Typically there's a lead time of 1-2 weeks. In which you'll have the time to collect together any agreed content I'll require.
What do I need to provide you with to get started?
Copy - Initially I'll ask for draft content during the discussion stage of the project. This helps us to discuss/plan how your content should be structured to ensure it'll deliver. Final copy will be needed before the Website build stage.
Branding - I'll need a vector version (ai, eps, pdf or svg file) of your logo if possible. Plus all other branding/marketing assets you may have. Unless of course you've requested for me to design them also.
Photos - High resolution images of your product or service is essential. It'll help show your business off to its best. If you don’t have these yet I'll discuss the type of shots and styling which would be required.
If you are missing or wish to update/change any of these let me know in the initial discussions. As I'll be able to put you in touch with freelancers who can help.
Will I have input during the process?
Yes your involvement is essential as only you know your business inside out. Which is key to the success of me providing you the best website possible. I prefer to approach projects together as partners, rather than client and supplier.
Can you just provide a new website design if I already have a developer?
Yes, the Design Visuals I'll provide you with can be handed to a developer of your choice. For them to turn into a functional website. You’ll receive a custom-designed website. In the form of static visuals, HTML/CSS template files or interactive prototype.
If I already have design visuals will you still make my website for me?
Yes, I'm very happy to take your design visuals and turn them into a fully functioning website for you.
I'm happy with my website design but wish it did more, can you help?
Always happy to add, adapt or update most existing websites.
Though I would need to discuss your requirements. Plus look into whether these would be possible with your current website.
When finished can I edit the website myself?
Yes, if you choose a Marketing Website (CMS) this will have some form of Contents Management System (CMS) where you will be able to edit or add content to your website.
Will I be shown how to manage and edit it?
Yes, I provide a one to one training session (included in the cost) showing you how to manage and edit your website. This can either be in person if you are around York otherwise it'll be via Skype.
Do you provide web hosting?
Yes but at present my hosting packages are still to be released. But I can still provide hosting which we can included in the initial discussions.
Do you offer support or/and maintenance?
Not at present as our support packages are still to be released.
What about my website SEO?
I build all my websites with on-page SEO. This ensures all search engine bots (Google, Bing etc..) can crawl your site easily. I do this by making sure your website is well structured and validates to the latest web standards. Has optimised images and contains all fields for metadata. Friendly URL structure and is fast to load.
After the launch of your website you can help to drive traffic to it through ongoing marketing. This can include making sure the content on your site is kept fresh and relevant. Including a blog or news page can be ideal for this.
What CMS do you use?
We can offer CMS solutions using any of the following systems:-
Perch, Perch Runway, MinsterCMS, Umbraco or WordPress.
Do you use Wordpress?
Usually not as there are many designers out there that specialise in just Wordpress. But if I believe it would be the correct fit for your requirements then I am happy to use it.
What is a SSL Certificate & do I really need one?
It's now vital all websites have a "Secure Sockets Layer" (SSL) Certificate. It creates a secure connection between the visitor's web browser and the server of the website they are visiting.
An essential form of security for all sites that handle sensitive information. Such as personal information or credit card numbers.
Search Engines are now marking down websites in their search rankings. Which don't have a SSL certificate seeing them as being insecure.
